Summer Insurance for RAs at NCSU
When an RA's appointment ends, so does their health insurance (even for
international students who are supposedly required to maintain health
insurance year round). For a TA appointment, the appointment date
in the terms and conditions contract appears to be the full year (August to August)
instead of ending when the the semester does (August - May).
For future reference, the health insurance options when a student's
appointment ends for the summer are:
- Purchase insurance through the university under the mandatory student
health insurance plan. The student will pay out of pocket for this, and
they will also have to pay the student health fee for the two summer
sessions in which they are not registered. This MUST be done within 30 days
of when the previous health coverage ended. The student has to contact Blue
Cross Blue Shield within this timeframe and ask to enroll in this plan.
- Purchase their own insurance
- Risk it and be uninsured for a few months
