Dear Graduate Faculty and Graduate Students,

The following email was sent back in July for registering for "Dept Approval Req" courses.  The same procedure is required for allowing a student to register in your class which is closed.  The student may request and be granted your permission verbally but they must have documented evidence that you have granted them permission to enroll in your class.  The usual procedure is

Students - if you plan to register for such a course, please have the
instructor notify our CSC secretartial staff
. The notice must include

Student name:
Student ID:
  Faculty member:
Course number:
Credits:

The instructor must forward the email to the secretarial staff.  It is not acceptable to have the
students send the email to the secretary.

This procedure also applies to late enrollees per:  According to the Academic Calendar for the 2003 Fall Semester, Tuesday,
August 26, 2003 is the last day to add a course without the permission of the instructor.

This is being sent in response to numerous inquiries.

Thanks,

Dr. Thuente
DGP

Students and Faculty:

Several graduate courses in TRACS are restricted with the phrase

"Departmental Approval Required". These are typically
courses where an individual works with a faculty member.
In the past we have used only one section for all registrants with a
corresponding end of term grading difficulty to track down the real
instructor.  Examples are
        CSC 630 - Master's Independent Study
        CSC 695 - Master's Thesis Research
        CSC 699 - Master's Thesis Preparation.
The entire list of such courses, including doctoral courses,  is
CSC 630, 693, 695, 696 (summer only), 699, 830, 893, 895, and 899.  CSC 690 and 890 are special cases.

The scheduling group has now created a new section of each of these courses, on a permanent basis,
for each faculty member who is supervising students in the corresponding course(s) .  Each
section will be listed as a course for the corresponding faculty member under "faculty access"
in  Records and Registration for grades etc., regardless of whether you have any students in the course.

Section 051: Mueller

As a simple process, students could fill in the information in this
email and forward it to their instructor, who could then forward
it to Krista to indicate agreement.

Those students who may have already registered in one of these classes for fall 2003 with Dr. Thuente
as the default instructor , and he is not your instructor, will need to drop that registration
and register as indicated above.

Thank you.
